Carvalho beach (Praia do Carvalho) is a very picturesque little beach that is located not too far from Carvoeiro town in western Algarve, Portugal. In fact, it is so little that it might be quite difficult to find it. When you first approach it, you might even think that the beach is inaccessible.
From the beach car park you have to take a long walk down the steps, where you will see a beach that is purely surrounded by cliffs. To get to Carvalho beach you have to go through a little tunnel which is carved out of the coastline cliffs. You see the full beauty of Carvalho beach only when you actually get there. Crystal clear water, clean white sand, magnificent sea and the surrounding cliffs. It is a perfect little spot to relax, spend some time in nature and forget all your worries.
The car park at the top of the beach is free of charge. On the down side, due to the size of this beach, there is no restaurant/cafe or toilet/shower facilities. Also, because accessing Carvalho beach is somewhat difficult, it might not be suitable if you are less mobile or travelling with small children. Because the only way to enter the beach is through a man made tunnel, keep in mind that you will be at risk of rockfall.
The beach might get quite busy during high season as the locals love this beach. Also, due to large cliffs, the sun seems to drop a shade on the beach quite early in the evening. Therefore, if you love sunbathing and arrive to this beach for the whole day, choosing a spot on the left side of the beach is highly recommended.
